About the Origins of Global English

The English language originated from Germanic dialects spoken by Anglo-Saxon tribes in Britain in the 5th century. It has been influenced by many other languages over the centuries, including Latin, French and Scandinavian.

The Germanic tribes from Angles, Saxons, and Jutes migrated from continental Europe to Britain in the 5th century. Their dialects merged with some Celtic and Latin words to form Old English.

Before the Germanic tribes arrived, the British spoke Celtic languages, which is the origin of Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

The Romans spoke Latin when they arrived in Britain in the first century. Latin words are found in place names that end in "-chester" or "-cester".

In the 9th century, the Vikings invaded Britain and brought their language with them, contributing many words to Old English.

After the Norman invasion in 1066, French influenced the English language.

Evolution from Old English to what is today's Modern English - Global English

Old English: Also known as Anglo-Saxon - the oldest version of English language.. This period lasted from the 5th to early 11th centuries. Old English had complex word forms, heavily inflected grammar and a vocabulary primarily derived from Germanic languages.

Middle English: Middle English is a form of the English language that was spoken after the Norman Conquest of 1066, until the late 15th century. It. was the transition period between Old English and Modern English. Middle English was influenced by Old English, French and Latin.

Early Modern English: The period from 1500-1700 is often called Early Modern English. The printing press was  introduced to England during this period, which led to the standardisation of spelling and grammar. The language of this period is also known as Renaissance English and Shakespeare's English.

Late Modern English: The period from 18th century to present day. The explosion of new words in the latter part of the 20th century was driven by the development of computer technology. The internet also led to the creation of many new words, such as "online" and "selfie".

How English became the Global language

The invention of the printing press in the 15th century helped standardise and spread the English language.

The expansion of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th and up to early 20th centuries contributed to the global spread and adoption of the English language around the world..

The rise of American global influence in the 20th and in today's 21st centuries, in areas like film, music, television, business and technology helped consolidate English's position as a global language.

The globalisation of the economy, society and politics has also increased the need for English as a global language and as a lingua franca.

Please note, what we know as Global English today, refers to either British English or American English though there are other native English varieties from other native English speaking countries and other non-native English varieties from non-native English speaking countries.

About Myself

I am originally from a region called South East Asia which is about approximately 10,000 km away from the land of Angles, Saxons and Jutes - where the English language originated and evolved from.

I probably discovered the many sounds of English since very young due to the fact that both my parents speak English as a lingua franca to each other though they speak it with a variant of Asian accent that is generally spoken in South East Asia.

I probably started speaking a distinct English accent at a very young age due to my early exposure to English as a lingua franca in a multilingual environment in South East Asia.

I am fascinated by the many varieties of English accents spoken by English speakers from around the world.

English is now my preferred first language and almost like a first language to me when communicating with people from different cultures.

I have a special affinity with the printed text of English language since young. I was an avid reader in English, and still is, but with the availability of internet, I prefer reading almost anything that interests me via online.

The present day digital age has enhanced my English language skills and has also enabled me more opportunities to explore the English speaking world via the virtual world as well as via the real world. It beckons me to explore the world and venture into the unknown.

My ability to think, listen, speak, read, write - communicate via what is today called English or Global English, has enabled me to connect with native English speakers as well as with non-native English speakers from around the world. It has also enabled me to have a better understanding of the many challenges in life.

I am easy-going and open-minded to new ideas.

I used to work as a nurse in a rehabilitation centre in Singapore and later as a carer in nursing/residential homes in UK.

I used to teach young learners..

I am now starting another chapter in my life with Wendy's Global English.

Here are some of my educational qualifications/certifications since completion of my secondary education in 1986.
